Why GLP-1 Medications Cost So Much — and How to Pay Less

GLP-1 receptor agonists — including Ozempic (semaglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide), Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Zepbound (tirzepatide), and Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) — are among the most prescribed and most expensive medications in 2026. They work by mimicking gut hormones that regulate blood sugar and appetite, producing significant weight loss and metabolic improvements in clinical trials. They are currently available only as brand-name drugs, with no generic equivalents approved in the U.S.

Retail prices range from $935/month for Ozempic to $1,349/month for Wegovy. Without insurance or a savings program, these medications are unaffordable for most patients. However, several options exist to reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs depending on your insurance status and income.

For commercially insured patients, manufacturer savings cards from Novo Nordisk (Ozempic, Wegovy) and Eli Lilly (Mounjaro, Zepbound) can reduce monthly cost to $0–$25 for eligible patients. Coverage eligibility depends on your specific insurance plan and formulary tier. Many plans require prior authorization and may mandate trying other weight-loss or diabetes medications first.

For uninsured or Medicare patients, compounded semaglutide from licensed compounding pharmacies has been a lower-cost alternative, though FDA regulations on compounded GLP-1 medications are evolving. Telehealth programs specializing in GLP-1 prescriptions can also reduce the cost of access. RxDiff's GLP-1 savings hub compares all available options and lists current manufacturer program details.
