Separate a lower price from a lower total cost
For a maintenance medicine, compare the cost per prescribed day of a 30-day and a 90-day fill, including delivery or membership charges. Ask whether your plan permits the longer supply and whether the prescriber has authorized it. Paying for more medicine at once is not a saving if the dose is likely to change.
For telehealth, separate the consultation charge from the medicine, dispensing, and shipping charges. For specialty medicines, find out whether your plan requires a particular pharmacy and whether an assistance offer changes what counts toward your deductible. Do not switch pharmacies until the plan and dispensing pharmacy confirm the prescription can be filled.
Prepare an assistance or reimbursement check
An assistance directory can help you find a program, but the directory is not the final eligibility decision. Have the exact drug, insurance status, and the program’s requested documents ready; verify application requirements with the program itself.
If you plan to use an HSA or FSA, check the expense with your account administrator and retain an itemized receipt. An eligible expense is not necessarily reimbursable from every account in every situation. These guides help you identify the next question to ask rather than assume an offer or reimbursement will apply.
